Tungsten carbide is a compound of tungsten and carbon, bound with a small amount of nickel or cobalt. It's one of the hardest materials used in jewellery, around 8.5 to 9 on the Mohs scale, so a tungsten ring keeps its finish for years. The trade-offs: it can't be resized, and a hard knock can crack it.

How tungsten rings are made
Pure tungsten is too brittle for jewellery. Instead, tungsten carbide powder is mixed with a binder metal, pressed into shape and heated until it fuses (a process called sintering). The ring is then cut, polished and, for black or gold styles, coated with a colour finish. Inlays such as wood, opal or carbon fibre are set into a channel in the band.

- No maintenance: no tarnish, no polishing, just a wipe with soapy water.

The limitations
- No resizing. Tungsten is too hard to cut and re-join. Measure carefully, and check the seller's size exchange terms (see our returns policy).
- It can crack. Hardness isn't the same as toughness. A sharp blow against concrete or steel can crack a tungsten ring where gold would dent.
- Finishes can wear. Black and gold coatings are durable, but edges can show wear after years of hard use.
- The binder matters for allergies. Most people have no reaction. If you're allergic to nickel or cobalt, ask the seller which binder they use before buying, or choose titanium.
Can a tungsten ring be removed in an emergency?
Yes. Tungsten can't be cut with a standard ring cutter, but because it's brittle, emergency staff crack it off with locking pliers in a few seconds. If your finger swells, don't wait: raise your hand, cool it, and seek help early.
